What happens in the class?
In the new member class, Welcome to the Family, our primary goal is to orient you to our church. Each week (or session) there’s a main speaker, usually a pastor, who talks a little about their own story as well as a topic related to the church, leaving time at the end for your questions. From time to time we may even have representatives from various church departments and ministries come in and give you a taste of what they’re up to. We will end our last session together over a potluck meal with Pastor Jonathan Alexander. Following our time with Pastor Jonathan you’ll meet in groups with an overseer to confirm your desire to join. Individual dates for meeting with elders will be set in class.
*One day classes start with a Shared Potluck
Do I have to join the church?
Not at all! Even if you decide not to, you will become more educated about who we are and what we believe. We offer the class to help you explore our church and consider the possibility of membership/ownership, but it is by no means an expectation or a requirement.
Will I get to meet the pastoral staff?
We do our best to get our pastoral staff into the classes; however it’s difficult to always have all the pastors visit. We will introduce you to all of our pastoral staff either through pictures or in person.
What if I'm not baptized?
If you intend to join the church and have never been baptized as an adult in a Christian church, we require and provide an option to get baptized as part of the membership process. A pastor will talk with you about what baptism entails–it’s a wonderful experience and symbol of your commitment to Christ. If you have questions, feel free to call us!
Can I miss a session and still join the church?
Please plan to be present at every session. If you know that you will miss a session before the class begins, please plan to register for the next class. Welcome to the Family is offered six times a year.
Is there a cost for the Welcome/New Member Class?
No.
Why are some classes three weeks and others are only one day?
We find that some people cannot do a three week class with their schedules, so we offer an alternative three hour class three times a year on Sunday afternoons.
Is childcare offered?
Yes, it is offered during the three-week session classes, although there is none for the single three-hour course.
